Back to back Western Disturbances have been affecting the Western Himalayas for the past many days. With this, the hilly states of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand have been observing pre-Monsoon rain and thundershower activities.

In the last 24 hours from 8:30 am on Tuesday, Gulmarg recorded rain to the tune of 11.6 mm, QaziGund 9 mm, and Srinagar 4.6 mm. In the same time frame, Kullu witnessed 3.6 mm and many other parts of Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh also observed very light rain activity.
Now we expect rain intensity over Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh to decrease to some extent today. But these weather activities will once again pick up pace and fairly widespread rain and thundershower activities will be observed over Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand.
Meanwhile, on April 19 and April 20, few heavy spells are also possible over all these states on account of fresh Western Disturbance. Due to these heavy rains there are chances of landslide and mud slide at many places over the Western Himalayas.
However, by April 21, the Western Disturbance is expected to move away leading to significant decrease in rainfall activities. Weather will start clearing up and temperatures will also rise.
At present temperatures of Jammu and Kashmir are below normal by 5-8 degrees. We expect the temperatures to remain below normal for the next 48 hours and are expected to rise further after April 20. Temperatures of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand are near normal and are expected to fall during the next few days.
Therefore, the next two days are not suitable for heading towards the Western Himalayas. So, it is better for the tourists to avoid travelling to popular hill stations such as Srinagar, Pahalgaon, Dharamshala, Mussoire, Nainital etc.
