Northeast Monsoon 2015 has finally retreated from Peninsular India on a good note. The three-month long season has given excess rain over the region, particularly over Tamil Nadu.

For the overall season from October 1 till December 30, Tamil Nadu has recorded 673.3 mm of rain against the normal rains of 439.5 mm. With this, state has witnessed 53% of excess rains during the season.

Capital city Chennai, which saw worst rains in last 100 years, also witnessed 104% of surplus rainfall during the season. The city recorded 1608 mm of rain against the normal of 788.3 mm of rain.

Five districts of the state including Chennai witnessed over 100% of excess rainfall. These included Kanchipuram-184%, Tirunelvel- 126%, Thiruvarur- 149% and Vellore 115%.

2015 has been the second best year in last 10 years. Prior to that in 2005, state had received 79% of excess rainfall during Northeast Monsoon, which is the highest in the last decade.

One can note that this Monsoon season has fared really well in spite of no cyclone or depression in Bay of Bengal that cause maximum amount of weather activity, especially in December.

According to Skymet Meteorology Division in India, good rains in Northeast Monsoon is invariably linked with a strong El-Nino year, wherein the latter adversely affects Southwest Monsoon rains but keeps the Northeast Monsoon active.
