Another gem was added to crown of Indian Space Program, as on Wednesday morning Indian Space Research Organization launched its third remote sensing satellite Resourcesat-2A in the Earth’s orbit with the help of Polar Launch Satellite Vehicle.
PSLV-C36 was carrying the 1235kgs Resourcesat-2A which lifted off from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, at 10.25am situated around 100km from Chennai. The satellite will be stationed at 817 Km from Earth into polar Sun Synchronous Orbit (SSO). Exclusively for this flight, the 'XL' version of PSLV was used which posses six solid strap-on motors.
The rocket stands tall at 44.4 meters and is carrying two solid state recorders with a capacity of 200GB. The hard drive is installed to store images taken by the Linear Imaging Self Scanner camera, which can be shared with ground stations.
Resourcesat-2A is a remote sensing satellite which is designed for resource monitoring. The satellite follows the similar path of missions Resourcesat-1 and Resourcesat-2, which were launched in 2003 and 2012 respectively.
PSLV rockets are ISRO's versatile launch vehicles which are famous for launching multiple satellites in polar SSOs, Low Earth Orbits (LEO) Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit (GTO) and sub GTO.
During time period from 1994-2016, ISRO’s PSLV has successfully launched a total of 121 satellites, out of which 79 satellites are from abroad and 42 are Indian satellites.
