During last 24-48 hours, many regions of coastal Tamil Nadu received light to moderate rain and simultaneously few stations of interior parts of the state have also received scattered rain.
The rainfall recorded during last 24 hours over major stations are as follows: Chennai 36 mm of rainfall, Adirampatnam 17 mm, Kodaikanal 12 mm, Tiruchirapalli 73 mm, Valparai 34 mm, Uthagamandalam 9 mm, Tirupathur 11 mm, Coonoor 6 mm of rain.
Reports of light rain came in from Madurai, Salem, Thanjavur and Vellore.
By looking at the rainfall figures across the state, we can safely say that Tamil Nadu has finally received good amount of rainfall during last 24 hours.
At present, the southern state is rainfall surplus by 7%. Although since last many days, weather over Tamil Nadu remained almost dry but still rain figures are on a positive side. This is due to the fact that most parts of Tamil Nadu fall under rain shadow area. Therefore, subdued rainfall activity occurs over the state during the Southwest Monsoon.
Even the normal rainfall is also very low during this time of the year. The major amount of rain occurs during Northeast Monsoon which is from October to December.
But now, a feeble trough has developed along coastal Andhra Pradesh and North coastal regions of Tamil Nadu. This weather system will give scattered rain over many parts of Tamil Nadu for next 2-3 days.
