Is winter getting over in Delhi?

February 4, 2015 3:22 PM |

Delhi winter sunFor the last 2-3 days the weather in Delhi has been pleasant. Fog has been missing from the city and temperatures are recording close to normal. During the day time the skies are also clear allowing fairly good sunshine.

If we look at the temperature profile of the city in the last couple of days, the day temperature has been settling close to the normal average of 23°C, while the night temperature has been recording above normal by 3-4°C. For instance the Safdarjung Observatory saw the day temperature settle at 24°C on Sunday, while on Monday and Tuesday the maximums recorded 23.8°C and 23.1°C, respectively.

The night temperatures have also been settling on the higher side for the last few days. The minimum on Tuesday morning had settled at 13.6°C, which is almost 4 degrees above the normal average for the month. Similar situation was observed on Wednesday morning with the Safdarjung Observatory recording 11.3°C as the minimum temperature.

The temperatures in Delhi start increasing by February, particularly from the second week. There is a rapid increase in temperature by the middle of the month but that should not be construed to be the end of winter.

Weather systems like the Western Disturbances and cyclonic circulations moving across the region usually control the weather in the city. So whenever there is a system in place there are ample chances of cold conditions reviving in Delhi. Also the snow and rain in the hills and the plains keep affecting the weather in Delhi.

According to Skymet Meteorology Division in India, there is a Western Disturbance likely in the hills on February 7 then on February 18 and lastly on February 28. So there are chances that these systems may affect Delhi as well and bring about a change in the weather.
