Is it March or January in Punjab and Haryana?

March 10, 2015 2:15 PM |

rain in north indiaWinter seems to be returning back in the two states of Punjab and Haryana. Wrapped up winter clothes have come out once again, thanks to widespread rain accompanied by hailstorm in the plains of North India.

The previous Western Disturbance and its induced cyclonic circulation over Rajasthan and adjoining areas brought good amounts of rain and snowfall over entire North India including parts of Rajasthan. The system has now moved away, leaving behind January-like conditions in the month of March.

The plains recorded below normal temperatures for the third consecutive day on Tuesday morning. Minimum temperature in Kapurthala is 6.1°C, Jalandhar recorded 6.5°C, Ferozepur 6.1°C and Bhatinda 6.2°C.

Minimums start rising in the plains after mid-February and it’s a rare occasion when temperature drops below 10°C. However, at present most of the places are recording single digit temperatures. In the table below we can clearly see that minimum in Amritsar is even below January’s normal average.

Maximum temperatures are also below 20°C in places like Bhatinda, Ferozepur, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Pathankot, Ludhiana, Amritsar and Sirsa. According to Skymet, only marginal changes in night temperatures are expected during next 24 hours, before they rise once again.
