During the pre-Monsoon season, till date, Haryana has received normal rains with a deficiency of 17%. While, Punjab is deficient by 20%. The month of March remained almost dry for these states. However, scattered rains were seen during the month of April especially from April 15-17.
From the past few days, on and off pre-Monsoon activities are going on in Punjab and isolated activities have been a sight in Haryana. In the past 24 hours, many parts of Punjab and Haryana received good rains and thundershower activities. Isolated dust storm activity has also been observed over both the states. Yesterday places like Amritsar, Ludhiana, Patiala, Ambala, Rohtak, Hisar, Faridabad and Narnaul witnessed pre-Monsoon rain and thundershowers.
These activities were due to an induced Cyclonic Circulation that was over western parts of Punjab and Haryana. We again expect isolated rain and dust storm to occur over Punjab and Haryana during the next 24 hours. On the night of May 15, another Western Disturbance would approach Jammu and Kashmir. Hence, resulting in intermittent rains over these states. These activities will happen in isolated pockets and would not last for long. They are typical pre-Monsoon activities which take place either during late afternoon or night hours. Fortunately, these activities would help in keeping heat wave conditions under a check. Thus, heat wave conditions are not expected to make a comeback in Punjab and Haryana for at least one week or so.
