Every year, we’re all hoping and praying for Monsoon to arrive in Mumbai. When Southwest Monsoon makes onset in Kerala, Mumbaikars start preparing for the arrival of Monsoon in their city. But when the season finally makes an entry, it is always a dramatic one.
Most of the time, Mumbaikars don’t know what to make of Monsoon. At times it is pleasant enough for a visit to one of the rooftop restaurants in the city, and at times it is unforgiving enough to stay back home. Southwest Monsoon 2015 is starting to take its toll in Mumbai. We bring you eight interesting facts and figures about Monsoon in Mumbai.
1. Starting from 8.30 am on Thursday, Mumbai received 283 mm rainfall in 24 hours.
2. In the last 10 years, this (283 mm) is Mumbai’s highest 24-hour rainfall record for the month of June.
3. Average total rainfall for Mumbai in the month of June is 523 mm.
4. With 11 days still to go, Mumbai has already recorded 573 mm rainfall in June, thereby surpassing the city’s average monthly rainfall figure for June.
5. Road and rail traffic has been severely affected since Thursday afternoon. Waterlogging has been reported in several areas.
6. Mumbai’s average annual rainfall stands at 2258 mm. So far, the city has received 585 mm rainfall in 2015.
7. In 2013, Mumbai recorded 1029.8 mm rainfall in the month of June. This is Mumbai’s highest monthly rainfall record for the month of June in the last ten years.
8. As per the average total rainfall for a month, July is the rainiest month for Mumbai. On an average, Mumbai receives 799.7 mm rainfall in the month of July.
