Since the last few days, moderate to heavy showers are going on over Assam. Scattered rains are going on over the rest of Northeast India. In the last 4 hours, Cherrapunji in Meghalaya received 13 mm of rains, Kohima 20.4 mm and Legpui recorded 0.2 mm.
At present, a Cyclonic Circulation can be marked over Assam. Also, humid southwesterly winds from the Bay of Bengal are increasing moisture over Northeast India.
Under the influence of these systems, we expect the intensity of the ongoing rains to increase gradually. Many other states of Northeast India will also start receiving moderate to heavy showers between June 7 and 9.
This is when weathermen at Skymet expect heavy to very heavy rains over parts of Meghalaya, Nagaland and Mizoram. These moderate to heavy showers are expected to continue for at least the next one week.
As of now, almost all the states of Northeast India are running rain deficient. The accumulative rainfall deficiency of East and Northeast India for the season stands at 38%. Arunachal Pradesh and Assam are deficient by 39% and 29% respectively.
But these upcoming rains, are expected to bring down the rain deficiency to some extent.
