A blanket of thick fog layer has been enveloping many regions in North and East India during last two days. Dense to very dense fog is persisting along the foothills of Himalayas. In fact, places such as Bahraich, Bareilly, Gorakhpur, and Sidharthnagar in Uttar Pradesh are observing dense foggy mornings.

The intensity of fog is moreover East Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Sub Himalayan West Bengal. Parts of Haryana, Delhi, and West Uttar Pradesh also witnessed moderate to dense fog during the past day.

The return of fog can be attributed the passage of Western Disturbance over Western Himalayas, which had induced a cyclonic circulation over the plains. Both the system had then changed the wind pattern from cold northwesterlies to warm and humid southeasterlies. Thus, the situation was favorable for the formation of fog.

But now the systems are moving away. Therefore, the humid winds which were blowing over West Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Delhi will change its direction. We now expect the dry northwesterly winds to pick up pace leading to reduced intensity of fog over Haryana, Delhi and many parts of Uttar Pradesh.

However, dense to very dense fog will persist over Northeast Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Sub Himalayan West Bengal. Due to decreased fog intensity, the cold day conditions which were prevailing over Northwest Uttar Pradesh will too abate as the sun will up come early. Not only this, the maximum temperatures would also increase.

Meanwhile, Northeast India will not observe very intense fog. However, we expect moderate to dense fog to persist over West Assam and Tripura.
