Typical of Delhi winters has finally arrived on Monday afternoon, with chilly winds engulfing the entire national capital region. This led to significant drop in the maximum temperatures today, which settled at 12.9 degree Celsius. It was 10 notches below the normal average day maximum of 23.1 degree Celsius.

This has been the lowest maximum temperature recorded in Delhi during December in span of last 10 years. In fact, prior to this, the city had recorded lowest day maximum in December 31, 2003 at 12.4 degree Celsius.

Not only this, drop in day maximums have paved way for cold day conditions, which declared when the maximum temperatures are recorded below 16 degree Celsius.

According to Skymet Weather, after the clearance of Western Disturbance that had given season's highest snowfall over the hills of North India, chilly winds have been blowing across the northwestern plains. These winds are blowing straight from ice capped Himalayas, which are much cooler than the usual days. Wind speed have also picked up pace and at present are moderate. Thus, these ongoing unabated chilly winds for the last 2-3 days have led to substantial drop in both day and night temperatures.

Further, we do not expect much respite from freezing weather conditions during the next 2-3 days. In fact, we would see night temperatures dropping by several notches. This fall would continue for next 48 hours. Chances are bright that Delhi and adjoining areas of Faridabad, Noida and Gurugram would continue to battle cold day conditions.

As per weathermen, a fresh Western Disturbance would start affecting Jammu and Kashmir by December 18. This would then change the wind pattern and obstruct the flow of chilly northwesterly winds. However, it would not be anytime before December 19. Till then Delhiites would have brave icy cold winds.
