Fairly widespread to widespread rainfall with isolated heavy falls accompanied with thunderstorms and lightning is being observed in south peninsular India for the past few days.
Till date, Tamil Nadu is rain deficient by 44%. During the last 24 to 48 hours, moderate to heavy rains were witnessed over the southern districts of Tamil Nadu. These rains are in wake of reversal of wind direction over the Bay of Bengal.
As of now, south Tamil Nadu is being affected by the easterly winds. In due course of time, these winds will strengthen and will pave way for the commencement of Northeast Monsoon.
North Interior Karnataka along with South Interior Karnataka is rain surplus by 55% and 51%, respectively. Whereas Coastal Karnataka is rain deficient by 9%.
Now, a Cyclonic Circulation has formed over the Lakshadweep area. It will gradually intensify into a Low-Pressure Area and will move in a northerly direction. Due to this, winds over south Tamil Nadu will strengthen leading to increased rainfall activities over Tamil Nadu as well as over Kerala and Karnataka.
According to our experts, moderate to heavy rains are all set to lash southern and interior parts of Tamil Nadu as well as South Interior Karnataka, Coastal Karnataka and parts of North Interior Karnataka until October 18.
Thereafter, the Low-Pressure will move further west/northwestward and may intensify into a Well-Marked Low-Pressure Area. The moisture concentration will also remain around this system.
In the wake of this, rainfall activities will reduce over Tamil Nadu for a few days. However, intermittent rains will continue over the Coastal and North Interior parts of Karnataka from October 18 onward.
During this period rainfall activities will also pick up pace over the southern districts of Gujarat, Konkan, and Goa along with Coastal Karnataka.
Chennai which was earlier facing dry weather conditions is now likely to witness patchy showers. While Bengaluru, Mysore, Mangalore, Hassan, and Karwar are expected to witness moderate showers.
