Today, many parts of Delhi NCR recorded intense thundershower and rain activities associated with hailstorm over many parts, particularly over Faridabad and South Delhi. Due to strong winds and rain, flight diversion, delays have also been witnessed. Power blackouts have been seen in parts with some trees also being uprooted. Moreover, traffic chaos as well as waterlogging has been observed in many areas of the national capital.
Talking about temperatures, minimums dropped significantly between between 5:30 to 6:30 in the morning, wherein a drop of 10° was witnessed. The minimum temperature dropped from 29° to 19° in just one hour. The minimum at Safdarjung was recorded at 17.2°C, which is not only the lowest of the season but also lowest minimum during a decade. However, the lowest all time minimum in May stands at 15.2°C, which was observed in May 2, 1982.
These Pre Monsoon activities are due to a cyclonic circulation persisting over parts of Haryana and Punjab. Also, a Western Disturbance is travelling along the Western Himalayas and a trough is extending from the Cyclonic Circulation up to eastern parts of the country. Moisture feed is also available from Bay of Bengal in the form of easterly winds.
One odd spell of rain and thunder shower activities may occur today during the late evening or night hours. Tomorrow also, there are chances of rain and thunder shower activities over Delhi NCR including parts of Punjab, Haryana and western parts of Uttar Pradesh. Thereafter, by 25th May, the weather will start clearing up.
However, temperature will not increase significantly and there will be gradual increase and we do not anticipate any heatwave conditions for at least next 3 to 4 days over Delhi and NCR.
