Chennai continues to battle intense heatwave conditions for the second consecutive day. There has been a sudden increase in the day temperatures by six degrees in last 48 hours.

The maximum temperature over Chennai, which was settling at 35.1°C on May 13, increased to 41.1°C on Monday. This was four degrees above the normal average temperature of 36.8°C.

According to Skymet Weather, dry and hot inland winds blowing from the western region are responsible for the significant increase in the mercury. These inland winds are very hot in nature as compared to the winds coming from Bay of Bengal.

Such high day temperatures in coastal city has made the weather unbearable as the feel-like affect is much more.

However, weathermen are now predicting some respite over Chennai in the next 24 hours but the relief will marginal one only. A cyclonic circulation is likely to form over Interior Tamil Nadu and South Interior Karnataka.

The system is likely to give moderate to heavy rainfall over Interior Tamil Nadu but coastal areas including Chennai could only witness thundershowers, thunderstorm or some light rain.

But in spite of these isolated pre-Monsoon weather activities, discomfort will continue to persist over Chennai. The day maximums will continue to settle above the normal average.
