After brief respite, heatwave conditions have gripped Chennai again and this time with a bang. Since Saturday morning, sun has been shining bright and so does the levels of humidity.
Mercury has already surpassed 39°C today and we expect day maximums for Saturday to settle around the similar figure only. However, sea breeze has started settling in gradually that will gradually bring in some relief by the evening hours.
“Weather has become extremely unbearable for the Chennaiites. Though mercury has risen significantly but the tremendous increase in the humidity levels have made the feel like factor much more than the prevailing temperatures,” said Mahesh Palawat, Chief Meteorologist, Skymet Weather.
According to Skymet Weather, hot southwesterly winds have been blowing over the state capital which had risen the temperatures.
Further, we do not expect any relief from heatwave conditions for the next 24 hours as well. Thereafter on Sunday, we can expect some respite in form of some thundery activity but the relief would be momentary only.
Rising day temperatures when coupled with high humidity may lead to development of convective clouds over Chennai that may give some pre-Monsoon activity over the city. However, the activity would be during the later afternoon or evening hours and thus, it will not have much impact over temperatures though gradual fall is expected.
Few days earlier also, the day maximum had reached 38-degree mark. Blame it all on the prolonged dry spell over the region due to absence of any significant weather systems.
