On Sunday, few regions of Maharashtra, mainly Vidarbha and some parts of South Madhya Maharashtra got to witness some isolated light to very light rains. However, as the spells were short-lived, the weather became dry and hot again.

In fact, parts of Marathwada, Vidarbha and many parts of Madhya Maharashtra reeled under high day maximums that were ranging from 40°C to 45°C.

In wake of this, heatwave continues to grip parts of Vidarbha, while other divisions of the state continue to witness heatwave like conditions. Heatwave conditions are declared when the maximum temperature of a city is 40°C or above and is above the normal average by 5-6 degrees. And, if the places is also ready surpassing 45°C, it is declared heatwave.

On the contrary, the temperatures in Konkan division remained under check, almost near normal.

Skymet Weather now also does not foresee any major weather activity over the state. Hence, the weather of Maharashtra would continue to remain hot and dry. Heatwave conditions are anticipated to continue in parts of Vidarbha.

On the other hand, heatwave like conditions would rule the parts of Marathwada and Madhya Maharashtra for the next 24 hours. Thereafter, the temperatures may increase again.

However, a slight relief is in sight for the parts of Vidarbha on account of an isolated thunderstorm or rains after 24 hours. However, the intensity would remain light and would be for a short duration only.

At this stage, let us see the impact of this weather on the agriculture belt of Maharashtra:

Farmers are advised to do light and frequent irrigation for summer crops, vegetables, and orchards in the wake of prevailing heatwave conditions. Preparatory tillage operations such as ploughing, harrowing, land leveling and bundling should be done as early as possible.

Deep ploughing should be done to make soil porous, so that the roots of the plants develop fully. In view of expected rain in Vidarbha, farmers are advised to avoid irrigation, intercultural operation and application of plant protection measures and fertilizers to the standing crops. Also, they should avoid harvesting of matured crops and keep the already harvested produce at safer places.
