The state of West Bengal has been reeling under intense cold weather conditions with today morning witnessing the season's lowest minimums. Purulia saw 7.9 degrees, Shanti Niketan saw 8.6 degrees, Jalpaiguri witnessed the minimum at 7.5 degrees, Cooch Behar 5.6 degrees, Siliguri 6.8 degrees.
Along with this, it has been the first time this season Darjeeling saw the minimum at 0.5 degrees Celsius.
This region does not see such harsh conditions, thus it is not a common occurrence here. Sub Himalayan West Bengal in particular will see single-digit minimums for at least some time now. Sub Himalayan West Bengal due to its proximity with the mountains, is more susceptible to such weather conditions. These conditions will also be seen in parts of Gangetic West Bengal for at least the next 3-4 days.
The reason for intense cold is the long absence of an active Western Disturbances as these systems keep causing interruptions in the flow of northerly winds.
