Updated at 02:00 PM: The cyclonic circulation over Sri Lanka and adjoining Southwest Bay of Bengal has further strengthened into a low-pressure area over the same region.

According to Skymet Weather, due to the continuous moisture feed from Bay of Bengal, the system was able to intensify further. However, it is highly unlikely for the system to get more marked due to close proximity to the coast.

In wake of this, moderate to heavy rains will continue to lash the state of Tamil Nadu including Chennai in span of 2-3 days. One or two spells of very heavy rains over few areas cannot be ruled out.

Instances of thunderstorm and lightning are also expected over some places, along with moderate to strong and gusty winds. Sea conditions will also be rough along and off the coast. Both locals and fishermen are advised to cautious while venturing out in the see.
