The Indian Coast Guard has rescued 27 workers off a flooded barge in the Arabian Sea of Ullal close to Mangaluru district in Karnataka.
Out of 27, four personnel were safeguarded on Saturday and the rest were saved from danger around 5.30 am this morning. The operation had to be put on halt during Saturday night due to strong winds and heavy swell in the region. At first light, the rescue operation was resumed and the remaining people were rescued.
The vessel, Dredger Ibis, was accounted to be in trouble at 8 pm on Saturday about four kilometers south of the Mangalore Old Port.
The Karnataka Coast Guard had first got a telephonic call around 4.45 pm from the New Mangalore Port Trust about the flooding in the barge. The operations team sent Indian Coast Guard Ship (ICGS) Amartya, which was on patrol, to help the concerned barge as quickly as possible.
The ICGS Amartya reached the position at 6.40 pm and after considering the weather conditions, an inflatable rubber boat called the Gemini was lowered at 6.48 pm, with diving officer and boarding team.
In spite of the rough weather, they towed the life raft of the barge with four workers onboard towards the ICG ship.
