Kerala and Coastal Karnataka has been witnessing rains for last three consecutive days. Particularly last 24 hours have seen some good rain activity both in terms of spread and intensity.
Lakshadweep Islands have also been witnessing light to moderate rain and thundershowers.
According to Skymet Weather, cloud mass and weather conditions are still conducive for fairly widespread rains to continue for next few days. However, intensity of rains may keep varying from time to time.
Let us have a look at the rainfall figures recorded in millimeters across the region:
The ongoing rainy spell is indicating towards the arrival of Southwest Monsoon over Kerala soon.
One of the criteria for the onset of Monsoon is when 60% of the above listed 14 stations across Kerala, Coastal Karnataka and Lakshadweep Islands start witnessing rains of 2.5 mm or more for at least two consecutive days after May 10.
However, for the formal announcement of the Southwest Monsoon we need to fulfill three more criteria of wind direction and cloud pattern. Till then we need to wait and watch.
