India records 47% excess rainfall this week

Rain in IndiaIndia witnessed another week of excess rainfall. According to the data recorded, the week ending on April 29 has observed 47% of surplus rain.

Rain in North India

In North India, the hilly states of Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh remained rain deficit to the tune of -22% and -89%, respectively. But, Uttarakhand received 13.5 mm of rain against the normal average of 7.9 mm, which is 70% surplus.

Unlike last week, Punjab recorded a rain deficit of 48%. The state received just 1 mm of rain against the average of 2 mm. Rainfall in the sub-division comprising of Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi, was deficit by 29%. However, west Uttar Pradesh performed well and recorded 320% excess rain.

Rain in East India

East India received widespread rain in the week beginning on April 23. The sub-divisions that performed extremely well include Gangetic West Bengal, east Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, Bihar, Odisha and Chhattisgarh. Odisha and Gangetic West Bengal experienced 253% and 227% of excess rainfall, respectively. Bihar and Jharkhand have also recorded a surplus of 173% and 250% respectively.

In Northeastern parts, the sub-division of Assam and Meghalaya received 58.4 mm of rain, against the average of 56 mm. Remaining states in the region did not catch up with the average rainfall for the week.

Rain in Central India

Central India witnessed a dry week, with heat wave conditions mounting in some places of Rajasthan, Gujarat and Maharashtra. Most of the sub-divisions in this part of the country remained 100% rain deficit.

Rain in South India

Peninsular India received widespread and good amounts of rain in the week gone-by. The sub-divisions of Telangana and Rayalaseema have had excess rainfall of 176% and 114%, respectively. South Interior Karnataka received 26.4 mm of rain, against average of 14.8 mm.

Out of the 36 sub-divisions, 19 have observed excess rain this week. Just 4 sub-divisions have recorded normal rain and 5 have been deficient. There were 5 Sub-divisions, which did not receive any rain at all.
