India extends help to Nepal, ramps up 'Operation Maitri'

April 29, 2015 3:41 PM |

5090 people dead… 10,000 injured… One million children in urgent need of help… Eight million affected in Nepal till now…

The devastating earthquake that hit Nepal on April 25, 2015 has claimed over 5000 lives. The death toll will keep rising by leaps and bounds if full-fledged rescue operations are not carried out properly. Inclement weather and ruptured communication means are making matters worse for the rescue teams. But, India stands strong to help the beautiful country to rise up once again.

The worst earthquake to hit Nepal in last 80 years has left the entire country devastated. People here do not have access to safe drinking water, they have no roof to cover their heads and are left vulnerable to waterborne diseases due to lack of sanitation facilities.

Indian Prime minister Narendra Modi reacted immediately after the quake and assured his counterpart in Nepal of support and assistance.

Operation Maitri

Relief and rescue efforts in quake-hit Nepal was named ‘Operation Maitri’ on Sunday.  Nearly two dozen Indian aircrafts (including heavy planes such as C130J Hercules and C-17 Globemaster) have been sent to Nepal, carrying disaster-response personnel, food, medical supplies, rescue equipment and mobile hospitals.

The Indian Air force, hundreds of personnel from the military, and 1,000 trained personnel of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), have been deployed for the cause. Besides, several NGO groups have also extended help to their neighbouring country. More than 5000 people have been brought back from Nepal so far.

Modi has also announced that, India in coming days will assist in rehabilitation and reconstruction work. He also donated his one month's salary to the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund (PMNRF) for providing aid to the people affected by the recent earthquake within India.
