According to the data available with Skymet Meteorology Division in India, February 26 to March 4 was the rainiest week for the country this winter season. The overall rainfall recorded was 27.9 mm against the average of 6.1 mm, which is 358% surplus. Odisha and NMMT (Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura) were the only sub divisions where rainfall was less or close to the normal average, rest all sub divisions observed excess rain.
Pockets of North India witnessed some record breaking rain. For instance, Punjab observed 37.2 mm of rain against an average of 5.5 mm, which is 577% excess. Similarly, Haryana witnessed 48.5 mm of rain against 4.1 mm, which is 1082% surplus. West Uttar Pradesh, with 43 mm of rain against 2.8 mm saw a surplus of 1434%. East Uttar Pradesh witnessed 29.4 mm of rain against 2.2 mm, which is 1235% excess. Vidarbha in Central India experienced 44.5 mm of rain against 2.5 mm, which was excess by 1679% and the highest in the country.
The other two months of December and January were also deficit. The cumulative deficit for the country in January was 11%. A marginal improvement was observed in February but the initial two weeks saw very less rain. From February 5 to February 11 the cumulative deficit for the country was 66%. And from February 12 to February 18 the deficit was 60%. However, a gradual improvement was observed with the week from February 19 to February 25 observing a surplus of 28%.
From here on rainfall across the country picked up making the week from February 26 to March 4 as the rainiest for the country. Meanwhile, there is another spell expected in the country from March 13 onwards, which will further push the rainfall figures for the month of March.
