Incessant rains to cause floods in Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland

Several districts of Assam, Meghalaya, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh have been receiving good rains since last two to three days. In fact, a few areas have also recorded a few heavy spells of rain as well. The last 24 hours also witnessed similar weather conditions wherein moderate to heavy showers lashed the aforementioned regions.

In a span of last 24 hours from 8:30 am on Monday, Cherrapunji recorded 94.2 mm of rainfall, Kohima 60.4 mm, Tinsukia 54 mm, Dibrugarh 35.7 mm, Passighat 30.8 mm, Tawang 26 mm, Jorhat 24.8 mm, Itanagar 16.4 mm, Silchar 16.1 mm, North Lakhimpur 11.2 mm, Mazbat 10.4 mm, Shillong 9.1 mm, Golaghat and Anni 2 mm, Tezpur 1.9 mm and Aizwal 1 mm.

These weather conditions can be attributed to a cyclonic circulation which is seen over central parts of Assam. Now, the axis of Monsoon trough is also expected to shift towards North and eventually will lead to an increase in the rainfall activities over Assam and Meghalaya.

Moreover, between August 9 and 12, heavy to very heavy rains are expected to occur over entire northeastern states particularly over Assam. In the meantime, extremely heavy rains are possible at few places which might trigger flooding in several parts of Assam and adjoining areas.

Just about a fortnight ago, many districts of Assam were reeling under intense flooding conditions. Now, due to these incessant rains in offing, the situation is likely to turn severe once again. During the next four days, heavy rains cannot be ruled out over the state. Thus, residents are advised to take prior precautions and remain safe.
