Life was thrown out of gear in major cities of Uttar Pradesh as incessant rain led to further increase in the water level of Ganga and Yamuna on Monday.

The situation in Uttar Pradesh continues to be forbidding as Ganga has crossed its danger mark and is still swamping several localities in Allahabad and Ghazipur and already submerged several areas including Mirzapur, Varanasi and Ballia districts.

UP government rushed six flood companies of PAC to the affected cities to carry out rescue works, while the army has been struggling to plug the breaches in the Ganga embankments.

Yamuna has also crossed the danger level at several areas including Auraiya, Jalaun, Kalpi, Hamipur, Banda and Allahabad. Lakhs of people have been shifted to relief camps and inhabitants in the bank of the rivers have been forced to move to safer places.

In Varanasi, Ganga water has entered main roads and the commercial establishments have been shut. The historic Dashashwamedh Ghat, visited by thousands of tourists daily, has been completely submerged. The drought prone Bundelkhand region has not been spared either.

The anguish of the flood affected people is becoming grimmer with every passing day. The scenario is miserable for people who have been hopping between the relief camps and their houses. In wake of the ferocity of the two rivers, government authorities have been trying their level best to provide basic facilities, food and medical services.
