Northeast India receives most of the rains during the Monsoon season. Especially, northern parts of Northeast India like Assam, Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh get heavy to very heavy rains.
Southwest Monsoon has been vigorous over Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and Meghalaya during the last 24 hours. With this, moderate to heavy showers have been recorded over several parts of states.
On the other hand, normal Monsoon conditions have been witnessed over other parts of Northeast India, giving light to moderate showers only.
During the last 24 hours from 8:30 am on Tuesday, Cherrapunji recorded a whopping 181.3 mm of rain, followed by Itanagar 73 mm, Pasighat 84.9 mm, Mazbat 39.6 mm, Dubri 43.8 mm and Shillong 28.1 mm.
As per Skymet Weather, the main reason for these rains is the moisture laden southerly winds blowing from the Bay of Bengal, bringing torrential Monsoon rains. Also, the trough running along the Indo-Gangetic plains is shifting closer to the foothills of Himalayas.
Thus, moderate to heavy rains will continue over many parts of northeastern states during the next 24 to 48 hours.
