People of Chennai have been relishing on and off Monsoon rains for last one week now. However, prolonged spell of rains was missing so far but last 24 hours have been different.
The capital city has been witnessing nonstop rains for last 20 hours. Light drizzle had started around 4 pm on Tuesday evening, which gradually picked up pace. Rain and thundershowers peaked between 6 pm and 9 pm, wherein some heavy showers were recorded. Subsequently, rains of varying intensity continued and even extended to Wednesday morning till 11:30 am.
In span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Tuesday, Chennai recorded 30 mm of rain. Thereafter on Wednesday, city received 3 mm from 8:30 am to 11:30 am.
According to Skymet Weather, more showers are expected throughout the day. Mainly light rain can be observed with one odd spell of moderate showers. However, it will not be an alarming situation.
Weathermen predict that intensity of rains will reduce during the next six hours, post which intermittent rains will continue.
Such prolonged spells of rain are not frequent during the Southwest Monsoon and are only common during the Northeast Monsoon.
As reiterated by Skymet Weather, these rains were on account of the low-pressure area in Bay of Bengal that had later traveled inland. Presently, the system is now marked over Chhattisgarh and adjoining North Andhra Pradesh and South Odisha. As the system moves further inland in west direction and becomes less-marked, the rains will also reduce over Chennai and weather will go dry once again after next 24 hours.
