Torrential rains lashed the City Beautiful, Chandigarh during the morning hours today. So much so that the joint capital city witnessed a whopping 112 mm of rain in a mere span of 3 hours  between 08:30 am and 11:30 am.

Thereafter, the intensity of rains reduced, however, light rain did continue over the area and about 3 mm of rain was recorded between 11:30 am and 2:30 pm. Due to the hefty showers, most parts of the city were inundated and water logged resulting in massive traffic jams, wreaking havoc among locals.

The reason for this cloudburst and hefty showers is the development of the cumulonimbus cloud over the city which ended up pounding torrential rains over the city. This occurrence almost felt like a cloudburst. However, in meteorological terms, a cloudburst occurs when the rate of rain is 100 mm per hour or more.

Weathermen at Skymet Weather do not expect similar weather incidents to reoccur in the next few days. However, in the wake of southeasterly winds that have been increasing moisture over the region, scattered rains cannot be ruled out.

Besides this, Chandigarh lies in the vicinity of the northern hills of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, thus the development of mammoth vertical cloud is not rare.

Until date, Chandigarh has recorded 138.3 mm of rainfall as against its monthly mean of 307.5 mm, out of which most of the rains were recorded today.
