Rain in Hyderabad

January began on a rainy note for Hyderabad with heavy showers lashing the city. In a span of 24 from 8.30 am on Thursday, Hyderabad recorded 37 mm of rain which pushed the total to 38.2 mm received by the city in the month of January so far.

This is possibly the heaviest spell of rain recorded by Hyderabad in a span of 24-hour in the month of January since 2004. The last heavy spell observed in Hyderabad 15 years back was 24.4 mm. According to statistics, the monthly average rainfall for the city in the month of January is 39.5 mm.

The all-time record for the city stands at 93.2 mm, observed almost a century back on January 3, 1922. The monthly figure for this month was 132.3 mm, which is also the highest.

The Confluence Zone over Telangana is now shifting away. Thus, lesser rains are forecast for Hyderabad in the coming days. However, some light rainfall might continue in the city.

The Northeast Monsoon is not the usual monsoon period for the state of Telangana but the region’s proximity to the southern states helps it to receive some amount of rain during this period.

Similarly, the capital city Hyderabad receives a fair amount of rain during the Northeast Monsoon season (October to December). Rains, however, retreat from the city in January after the Northeast Monsoon is over.

Notably, Hyderabad is seeing the most pleasant time of the year with its maximum temperature settling close to 30°C and minimum hovering around 20°C.
