Hottest day in Amritsar as mercury shoots to 44.6 degrees

The holy city, Amritsar, in Punjab recorded the hottest day of the season on Monday as mercury shot to 44.6°C in the city. The day temperatures settled 7 degrees above normal on Monday, increasing the discomfort of locals.

According to Skymet Meteorology Division in India, since last few days easterly winds were enabling the maximum temperature to settle in lower 30s. Due to a sudden change of winds into northwesterlies, a sudden jump in day temperature has been observed.

Usually, such high temperature in Amritsar is seen during the second half of the month. The Sikh shrine city's previous highest was recorded on May 24, 2013 which was 48°C.

Hot weather in North India

Hot weather conditions are prevailing in North India as several pockets are witnessing day temperature that is settling above 40-degrees mark. The scorching sun is forcing day temperature to settle many notches above normal.

Several places in North India are bracing for hot days as May approaches towards the peak of the summer season. For instance, while Hisar in Haryana registered maximum temperature of 41.4°C, and Sirsa witnessed maximum temperature settling at 40.3°C on Monday, Palam in Delhi observed a maximum temperature of 40.4°C on the same day.
