Hot and humid Chennai to get light rains

June 1, 2016 5:23 PM | Skymet Weather Team

Chennai has not witnessed any rains ever since the passage of Cyclone Roanu. In wake of the dry weather, temperatures have been settling slightly above normal for past 10 days.

However, Chennai is all set to witness light rain and thundershowers during next 24 hours.

With Monsoon like rains picking pace over Kerala, many parts of interior Tamil Nadu have also been recording on and off rains. Humid winds from Arabian Sea are reaching up to several parts of Peninsular India. Hence, Tamil Nadu that is a rain shadow area, is still recording rains.

In addition to this, a feeble trough is also extending from Chhattisgarh up to North Tamil Nadu. Hence both the systems combined together are expected to give some rain and thundershowers over Chennai on June 1.

As we move further, we can expect increase in Monsoon surge over Peninsular India. With this, most of Kerala and Tamil Nadu will start receiving frequent rain activities.

Hence, rain and thundershowers are likely to pick up pace over Chennai and adjoining northern districts of Tamil Nadu from June 5.

Till then, no major change is likely in temperature profile and hot and humid weather conditions will prevail. Thereafter with the increase in cloud cover and rain activity, temperatures will also go down bringing relief from sultry weather.
