The weather over the hill station is governed by the mountain ranges. In the North, we have elongated Himalayan ranges starting from West to East, i.e. from Jammu and Kashmir up till Arunachal Pradesh. Similarly, the western range famously known as the Western Ghats extends from Gujarat up till Kerala. All these ranges have in built ranges of shorter stretches. Bestowed with scores of natural riches as well as man-made wonders, South India has always been a bliss for travelers. The prominent in built range of Western Ghats is the Nilgiri Hills. Ooty, Coonoor and Kodaikanal are the three main hill stations confined to Tamil Nadu.

The weather conditions for both, North and South are varied in nature, barring the temperatures which are low in South as well. The main attraction being the snow which we don’t get to see down South. However, one can always witness frost in South.

Ooty which is 2240 metres high has been a popular hill station since years. It is also known as ‘Queen of Hill Stations’. Soaring mountains, thick forest, extensive grasslands and miles of tea gardens greet every traveler here in Ooty.

Coonoor is a picturesque hill station situated on the eastern side of the southern extremity of Doddabetta range, at an altitude of 1,850 metres above the sea level. Velvet lawns, exotic flora and the cool mountain breeze allure the city dwelling couples to the second largest hill station in the Nilgiris.

Located in the Dindigul district of Tamil Nadu, Kodaikanal is heighted at 2000 metres above sea level and is one of the most well-known and well-populated hill stations in South India. Meadows, grasslands, waterfalls, valleys, forests & lakes define this picturesque hideaway. Travelers can opt for boating in the Kodai lake and trek to various viewpoints for a mesmerizing view. This station is very frequently visited by city dwellers, and is a popular weekend getaway for Bangaloreans.

Winds are majorly responsible for any kind of weather activity. Rains are witnessed up in North during winters, whereas similar conditions can be observed in South too. Up in North, the frequency of weather activity is more in comparison to the South. Thus, we get too see different weather conditions up in North and less in South during winters. The systems affecting the North are ‘extra tropic’ in nature whereas, the systems affecting the South are ‘tropical’ in nature. Thus, weather characteristics are largely different.

The Cold Wave conditions are very rare in South, whereas in North it is more prominent. Due to low temperatures in South, cold weather takes the lush greenery away.

The lowest temperature recorded for this season for Ooty, Coonoor and Kodaikanal is 5°C, 7.4°C and 5.9°C, respectively.
