New Year started with a hefty spell of rain and snow over the hills of North India. Many hill stations including Gulmarg, Manali and Shimla observed heavy to very heavy snow in the month of January.
These rain and snow spells can be attributed to successive Western Disturbances that were affecting Jammu and Kashmir.
In fact, landslides and avalanche alerts were issued for several places. Residents as well as tourists were advised to take precautionary measures. Both air and road travel was severely affected due to these weather conditions.
The month of February was also good enough for the hilly states including Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, both in terms of rain and snow.
From past few days, the hilly states were observing dry and cool weather conditions. But now as a fresh Western Disturbance is likely to affect the Western Himalayas, weather conditions may take a turn once again.
In wake of this system, light to moderate rain and snow may occur over the higher reaches of Jammu and Kashmir by February 15. Gradually these spells are expected to spread across Himachal Pradesh and parts of Uttarakhand.
Until the Western Disturbance approaches, both maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to rise by February 14.
