High tide in Mumbai to aggravate waterlogging woesAfter heavy rains brought normal life in Mumbai to a standstill, a high tide at around 2:30 pm on Friday added to the misery of Mumbaikars.

The high tide, which was about 4 meters, flushed gallons of water in to the city, aggravating the waterlogging problem caused by heavy downpour in the commercial capital. A high tide with this level of intensity usually occurs on either a full moon or a new moon with varying intensity.

Small tributaries and drains usually flow into the sea. When a high tide this strong hits an area, the flow of these tributaries and rivers are blocked. This results in stagnation of water which further causes a flood like situation.

High tides occur due to the gravitational pull between the earth and the moon. The gravitational force of the moon is also related with various kinds of weather activities, high tide is just one of them. Tides are a common phenomenon in Mumbai and occur twice a day.
