The joyous city has been transformed into sad and lifeless as the scorching summer heat refuses to let go of Kolkata from its grip.
While Mumbai continues to stay comparatively pleasant, the capital city of West Bengal sizzles as temperatures continue to be on the rise.
Why is it so hot? Why is there no relief from these conditions? If you have thought it is just because of the absence of the rain, you may want to recheck.
Currently, Kolkata is receiving southwesterly winds which are blowing from the land. These winds are coming from areas where temperatures are already on the higher side. Also, neighbouring areas including several cities in Odisha are boiling with intense heatwave conditions.
Thus, hot winds are only increasing the maximums in Kolkata resulting in discomfort. While humidity levels are not as high in the city of joy, high temperatures are not letting the maximums drop.
Also, as Kolkata is a tad bit far away from the water body, the sea breeze effect also reduces as the distance from the coast increases.
Another reason for intense heat in Kolkata is that the anticyclone which would develop in the Bay of Bengal and send moist winds over the region is far deep into the sea. Also, no weather system is likely to affect the area for some time.
With temperatures above the 40-degree mark, the heatwave has gripped Kolkata hard. The next few days are going to be just the same with no relief likely.
In fact, the temperatures may increase even further in the coming days. It seems like rain gods aren’t in the mood to bestow any happiness over the currently not so joyous, city of joy.
