Here’s why Delhi is windy, dusty these days

Mercury soared in Delhi and the NCR region on February 18 and 23. During that time, maximums remained at least six to eight degrees above the normal levels. Now, temperatures have witnessed a drop of at least five to six degrees.

At present, the city is witnessing marginally above normal maximums and minimums. Similar weather conditions are expected to continue over the national capital for at least the next few days.

However, it is the dusty and windy days that have caught everyone’s attention. Due to steep pressure gradient, moderate to strong winds are blowing across Delhi and the NCR region. A pressure gradient is observed when a large variation of pressure occurs between two points.

Thus, winds tend to travel from high pressure area to low pressure area. Higher the variation in pressure table, stronger will be the winds. At present, a high pressure area is north of Delhi and pressure is low towards the south of Delhi, thus strong winds from north are resulting in windy and dusty days.

These dusty winds will continue for another 24 hours. Thereafter, due to approach of a Western Disturbance, the speed of these winds is expected to reduce. February 27 onward, both day and night temperatures will once again witness a rise and may reach around 28 to 29 degrees leading to the comeback of warm and uneasy conditions.

The slight chill witnessed during the early morning hours will also fade away and cool and comfortable mornings and nights will take over.
