Southwest Monsoon is a four-month-long period with varied characteristics and leaves several mysteries behind. While some areas receive excessive rains while the others see little rainfall activity during Monsoon.

As far as North India is concerned, the region comprises of hills including the states of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand. On the other hand, there are the plains which consist of Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh.

Northern parts of the country are the last to receive Monsoon rains barring the eastern Uttar Pradesh region. However, Pre-Monsoon showers continue which are counted in the Monsoon rains itself.

In North India, the Monsoon activities are governed by troughs, Western Disturbances and the systems forming in the Bay of Bengal.

Talking about how Monsoon 2018 is going to turn out for North India, there are chances of Monsoon of being within the normal range for the states of Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, and West Uttar Pradesh. Rajasthan unlike last two years of excess Monsoon rains is expected to witness Normal Monsoon this year.

Thus, Monsoon in Delhi, Amritsar, Chandigarh, Agra, Jaipur, and Jodhpur is expected to remain normal.

Meanwhile, Monsoon 2018 is expected to be on the higher side for East Uttar Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, and Uttarakhand. Due to which, cities of Varanasi, Gorakhpur, and Lucknow are expected to see slightly better rains. Srinagar, Shimla, Manali, and Dehradun are expected to witness normal to slightly above normal rains.

If we talk about Monsoons in the last two years, barring Rajasthan, other pockets did see deficit rainfall. For the hills of North India, 2016 was Monsoon rains slightly below the normal levels while 2017 remained normal in terms of rainfall performance.
