July 16, 2016 10:58 AM |

Rain in AmritsarPost the onset of Monsoon, Amritsar has been recording on and off rain and thundershowers but a heavy spell of rains was missing so far. This wait is finally over as the city has recorded its maiden heavy Monsoon spell of 85 mm of rain in span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Friday.

Not only this, these showers are here to stay for some more days as Punjab gears up to witness a prolonged spell of rains.

According to Skymet Weather, the axis of Monsoon trough is running through Indo-Gangetic plains and to be precise, it is currently passing through Ferozpur, Delhi, Lucknow, Gaya, Midnapore and further up to Northeast Bay of Bengal.

Besides this, a fresh Western Disturbance seen over North Pakistan and adjoining areas is also moving towards Jammu and Kashmir. All these systems combined together have been responsible for giving widespread rains over northern plains including several parts of Punjab.

Further, this Monsoon trough is likely to oscillate northwards and run closer to the foothills of Himalayas after next 24 hours. It is then, when rains will further intensify over most parts of Punjab including Amritsar. Isolated heavy to very spells are also likely during this period.

So far, the city has recorded 162.5 mm of rain and is likely to surpass is monthly average rainfall very soon.
