Monsoon has already made an onset over almost entire Northeast India on June 14. Since then Northeastern states have been witnessing moderate to heavy rainfall.
A cyclonic circulation persists over Sub Himalayan West Bengal and adjoining West Assam. Due to this, heavy to very heavy rainfall is being witnessed over West Assam and adjoining areas. However good rainfall is also been observed over West parts of Assam andMeghalaya.
During last 24 hours from 8:30 am on Wednesday, rainfall recorded in most parts ofAssamincludeDhubri 79 mm, North Lakhimpur 22 mm andGuwahati 13 mm. Light showers were also recorded inSilcharandDibrugarhwith 5.2 mm and 0.6 mm rain, respectively.
Moderate showers were recorded in parts ofSikkimas well.Gangtokrecorded 35.5 mm rainfall,Manganmeasured 29.2 mm rain and Jadong recorded 18 mm showers.
KailashaharinTripuraandItanagarinArunachal Pradeshalso witnessed moderate rainfall at 48 mm and 17 mm, respectively.
It is also expected that by the evening of June 17, a cyclonic circulation will develop over west-central and adjoining Northwest Bay of Bengal. Due to this, rainfall activities may slightly decrease overManipur,MizoramandNagalandbut rest of Northeastern states will continue with good rainfall. However, very heavy rains will not be observed over the region during this period.
As per Skymet Weather, Monsoon is expected to gradually cover parts ofBiharand entireWest Bengalby June 18 and 19. Hence it can be concluded that the Northeast region which is famous for extensive rainfall during Monsoon will again resume pace. Most pockets of Northeastern states have monthly average rainfall of more than 1000 mm. Moderate to heavy rains will continue throughout the month of June. Due to these continuous rains, many districts of Assam may face flood like situation.
Brahmaputra River and its tributaries might starts overflowing causing flood in many districts of Assam. Places likeJorhat,Sivasagar,Tinsukia, and Dibrugarh normally gets affected the most due to flooding.
