Heavy snowfall in Jammu & Kashmir, HP expected

Weather in the hills of North India is set to change for two to three days starting Friday onwards. A period of heavy to very heavy snowfall in Jammu & Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh is expected to start as a fresh Western Disturbance (WD) is heading for the Western Himalayan region.

According to our forecast, snowfall will start on Friday and increase in intensity on Saturday and Sunday. Few places in Jammu & Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh could experience heavy to very heavy snowfall and rain.

It would lead to a drop in day temperatures and rise in night temperatures in the states. Cold and dry weather is prevailing for the last couple of days in Jammu & Kashmir with Srinagar recording -2.3°C as the minimum temperature on Wednesday morning. The maximum temperature in Srinagar was recorded at 5.1°C which is near normal.

With minimum recording -12°C , Pahalgam is the second coldest place in India at the moment after Leh where the minimum is -13°C.  Gulmarg recorded -11°C as the minimum temperature while Qazigund was -7°C today.

The plains of Jammu & Kashmir including Jammu, Katara, Batole, Banihal and Bhaderwah that saw minimums settle close to normal on Wednesday will see night temperatures rise further. However, maximums which are also near or above normal will drop due to clouding and rain.

Jammu recorded a minimum of 8°C on Wednesday while the maximum settled at 20.3°C on Tuesday which is three notches above normal. Day temperature in Bhaderwah recorded 4°C above normal at 15.4°C.

Weather in Shimla has also turned a little warm as the minimum temperature on Wednesday was five notches above normal. Shimla recorded 6°C as the night temperature. Day temperature in Shimla for the last two to three days have significantly been higher than the normal. The maximum temperature recorded in Shimla on Tuesday was 16.7°C which is 9°C above normal.
