Heavy snowfall has been evading hills of North India so far. However, the wait is finally over as widespread snowfall is all set to envelope the region.
A Western Disturbance is already affecting Western Himalayas and is presently marked over North Pakistan and Jammu and Kashmir. It has even started giving light to moderate rain and snow over Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh.
Famous tourist destinations such as Shimla, Manali and Srinagar have recorded rain and snow during the last 24 hours.
Moreover, we expect intensity of rain and snow to increase gradually now onwards and good snowfall is expected over many areas of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. The ongoing activity is likely to continue till January 4.
This Western Disturbance can also be touted as the first active weather system of the season to give significant amount of snowfall. As the system moves away, intensity of rain and snow will decrease substantially by January 5 but weather activity will continue.
However, another Western Disturbance is seen approaching the region, which will start affecting the region by January 6. The system is also likely to pound moderate to heavy rain and snow over the hilly states for another 48 hours.
In wake of this, threat of flash floods and landslides are looming large over the hilly areas. Moreover, vital highways and routes are also likely to be shut down due to heavy rain and snow.
Besides this, maximum temperatures which were above normal over most parts of Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh will come down significantly.
Minimums will also rise marginally during the next 24 hours, thereafter they will also start falling. The effect of good snowfall will also be felt of northern plains as mercury will also plummet January 7 onwards due to icy cold winds.
