Heavy snow, rain to lash Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal, Uttarakhand on January 4

Due to the feeble Western Disturbances moving across the higher latitudes, mainly dry weather conditions were prevailing over most parts of the Western Himalayas making the winter performance in terms of rain and snow not so satisfactory over the hills of North India.

In fact, as on December 31, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand were largely rain deficient. Meanwhile, even after occurrence of rain and snow across most parts of Jammu and Kashmir, the state’s overall performance was also not so pleasing.

However, as predicted by Skymet Weather, during the last 24 hours saw light to moderate rain and snow over many parts of Jammu and Kashmir. Along with this, the higher reaches of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand also witnessed isolated rain and snowfall activities. All thanks to the passage of an active Western Disturbance across North Jammu and Kashmir,

In the last 24 hours from 08:30 am on Tuesday, Gulmarg recorded 9 mm of rain, followed by Banihal 5 mm, Manali 3 mm and Qazigund 2 mm.

In wake of the ongoing rains and cloudy sky over the northern hills, day temperatures have dropped significantly over most parts of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal, Uttarakhandand and are being recorded 4˚C to 5˚C below normal. On the other hand, night temperatures have shown a rising trend.

Now, on January 3, we expect a short break from the ongoing rain and snow. However, isolated pockets of Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh will continue to witness light rain and snow. Further, again from January 4, due to the another active Western Disturbance, another spell of widespread rain and snow is likely over the Western Himalayas.

All the three hilly state of North India will experience good rain and snowfall activity with isolated heavy snow in few pockets.

Thus, we can say that the upcoming heavy snow may cause some serious disruptions in terms of road blockage and avalanches. Therefore, all the residents and people travelling towards the hills are advised to take precautions beforehand and avoid any mishappening.

Furthermore, once the above-mentioned system has moved away around January 7 and the weather starts clearing up, we expect cold wave conditions to once again commence over Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand.
