Heavy snow in Shimla leads to schools and roads closure

At present, almost entire India is witnessing the notorious weather pattern. On one hand, most states of North India are witnessing pre-Monsoon downpours and on the other hand, the northern hills of the country are reeling under rainy and snowy weather conditions.

The hilly states of Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh are affected by the ongoing snowy weather. The most popular tourist spot Shimla is also enveloped under snow. In fact, snow has painted the city all white.

In the last 24 hours, from 08:30 am on Thursday, Shimla has received 40 mm of precipitation, while Kufri recorded 70 mm of precipitation. The other districts of Himachal Pradesh that were engulfed under snow during the same time frame including Narkanda that recorded 50 mm and Kharapathar 20 mm. Snow also battered the districts of Kinnaur and Kullu.

Most of the schools in Shimla declared a holiday on account of such heavy snowfall. Moreover, the road to Kufri is also closed due to such bad weather. The fresh snow spell that has lashed Shimla and other vacationing spots in the state is due to the Western Disturbance which is over North Pakistan and adjoining areas.

This snow spells also pulled down the temperatures of various districts of the state several notches below the normal. In the last 24 hours, the minimums in Shimla plummeted six degrees from the normal and settled at 0.4°C, Kalpa recorded -2.8°C, Keylong -5.2°C, and Manali -0.8°C.

As per Skymet Weather, these rain and snow episodes in the northern hills are expected to continue for the next 48 hours, reducing thereafter.
