Heavy Monsoon rains have been lashing Kolkata and adjoining areas of West Bengal since Wednesday morning. So much so that Alipore Observatory in Kolkata has recorded 56 mm of rain in span of nine hours from 8:30 am to 5:30 pm. Simultaneously, Dum Dum Observatory has witnessed 38 mm of rains in the similar time frame.
Rain in Kolkata were light in nature during the morning hours, but as they day progressed, rains picked up the pace. Rains were at peak between 2 pm and 5 pm today.
Moreover, rains are still on over the state capital and nearby areas. In fact, weather conditions are showing no sign of relenting anytime soon. Weathermen are predicting rains to continue over the city for some more hours, may be slight reduction in the intensity.
According to Skymet Weather, these rains can be attributed to a cyclonic circulation over Bangladesh and adjoining areas. A trough is also running from this system across Gangetic West Bengal. Both the system shave kept the weather conditions conducive for rains throughout the day.
Further, rains are here to stay and we can expect similar spell on Thursday as well. During the next 24 hours, the city may again witness spell of moderate to heavy rains.
Ongoing rains have kept the mercury under check throughout the day, with day maximum settling at 28.9 degree Celsius. This was three degrees below the normal average.
