Heavy rains to lash northeastern states, Monsoon to advance in parts of Northeast India soon

Southwest Monsoon 2019 finally marked its onset after a delay of almost one week over Kerala during the last 24 hours. Now during the next 48 hours, conditions are favourable for further advancement of Monsoon into remaining parts of the South Arabian Sea, Lakshadweep area and Kerala, some more parts of Tamil Nadu, southwest, southeast, east-central and northeast Bay of Bengal and some parts of the central Arabian Sea and west central Bay of Bengal.

In fact, conditions are becoming favorable for the advancement of Southwest Monsoon in some parts of the northeastern states. Due to this situation, moderate to heavy rains occurred over Sikkim, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Upper Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. Light to moderate rains were observed over rest parts of northeastern states during the last 24 hours.

In the last 24 hours from 08:30 am on Saturday, Gangtok recorded heavy rain to the tune of 73 mm, followed by Passighat 59 mm, Cherrapunji 47 mm, North Lakhimpur 47 mm, Siliguri 47 mm, Dibrugarh 41 mm, Agartala 15 mm, Barapani 10 mm, Kailashahar and Jorhat 9 mm, Shillong 8 mm, Kohima 6 mm, Lengpui and Mazbat 5 mm, Kalimpong 4 mm.

These rains occurred in association with a cyclonic circulation present over parts of Northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining parts of the Gangetic West Bengal and Bangladesh region. A trough extending from this system up to eastern parts of Bihar is also enhancing these weather activities. The direction incursion of moisture flow from the Bay of Bengal is continuing over the northeastern states.

Now further also we expect similar weather conditions to occur over the northeastern states of India. In fact, heavy rains are expected to lash parts of Upper Assam and adjoining parts of Arunachal Pradesh due to the Western Disturbances moving across the higher latitudes.

Thus, we can say that in the wake of further advancement of Monsoon, light to moderate rains with heavy spells will occur over Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura during the coming days.
