Heavy rains to keep lashing Karnataka, Cyclone Kyarr to form anytime soon

October 24, 2019 10:47 AM |

Rain in Kerala and Karnataka

Northeast Monsoon has begun with a bang for South India. The impact of Well-Marked Low Pressure Area is clearly visible over coastal districts of Karnataka. As had been forecast by Skymet, heavy to very heavy rains lashed coastal Karnataka during the last 24 hours. While Karwar received 111mm, Honnavar 113 mm, Mangalore 61 mm and Belgaum recorded 19 mm. However, rains were light to moderate in intensity over Interior Karnataka.

Now, we expect heavy to very heavy rains to continue over Karnataka coast for another 24 hours. Northern districts of Coastal Karnataka will get more rains in comparison to South coast.

The Well Marked Low Pressure Area, which is over east central Arabian Sea will gradually intensify into a Depression anytime soon. By tomorrow, the system will start moving in Northwest direction while intensifying further into a Cyclone. This Cyclone will be called ‘Kyarr’.

However, its impact will fade away over Karnataka from October 26. The significant decrease in rain activities will be due to the concentration of moisture around the Depression. As it will be moving away, therefore the wind direction will also change and moisture feed will decrease over Karnataka.

These heavy rains have already triggered flash floods over many parts of Coastal Karnataka which has led to 13 fatalities till now. All the reservoirs in Krishna and Kaveri basin are full and discharge of water from these dams has consequently been increased. Army and NDRF teams have been deployed over North coastal districts of Karnataka.

Due to decreased rain, we expect the situation will start improving after 48 hours.
