Many parts of Gujarat continued to witness heavy to extremely heavy rainfall on Sunday as well. Cities of Ahmedabad, Dessa, Idar, Rajkot and Kandla suffered the most. In fact, some of these areas even witnessed three digit rains wreaking havoc over the cities.
Due to these heavy rains in Gujarat, flood conditions continue over many parts of the state. During the last three days, over thousands of people in Morbi, Rajkot, Jamnagar, Surendranagar and Ahmedabad districts have been shifted to safer places. Rescue operations continue in full swing across the state. Meanwhile, major roads of the city were also flooded leading to a traffic jam on Sunday.
In a span 24 hours from 8:30 am on Sunday, Deesa recorded 248 mm of rainfall, Idar 112 mm, Ahmedabad 64 mm, Kandla 38 mm, New Kandla 21 mm, Surendranagar 11 mm, Rajkot 8 mm, Bhuj, Surat and Vallabh Vidyanagar recorded 7 mm, Bhaunagar 3 mm, Porbandar 2 mm and Amreli 1 mm.

These weather conditions can be attributed to the presence of a low pressure area over South Rajasthan and adjoining areas. Due to this weather system, moisture incursion increased over the region resulting in cloud formation and subsequently, rains. Due to this weather system, heavy to very heavy rains are expected to continue over Saurashtra and Kutch region for the next 24 to 48 hours.

Due to this, flood like conditions are expected to persist over the region for some more time. Thereafter, it is likely that the rainfall intensity over the state may reduce significantly after July 25. After which, no significant weather system is likely to prevail over the state. Due to which, only scattered light rains may be witnessed over the state.
As on July 23, the state wise rainfall distribution shows that Gujarat is rain surplus by 22% and Saurashtra and Kutch region is rain surplus by 74%.
