Many parts of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh received heavy to very heavy rains between 30th August and 01st September 2024. Large parts of these two states were flooded and quite a few areas were inundated. Water bodies got filled beyond their capacity and therefore, overflowed. Inclement weather conditions claimed lives and damaged the infrastructure. Relief, rescue and rehabilitation operations are still going on. The weather conditions are not likely to worsen, as before and rather improvement is likely in many parts.

Monsoon depression, which formed over the Bay of Bengal, last week was responsible for the deluge over these two states. The weather system has moved away to a safe distance, now. There is another low-pressure area likely over the Bay of Bengal in the next 48 hours. A cyclonic circulation, as the precursor to the system is brewing over the Bay of Bengal, off Odisha and Andhra Pradesh coast. Under the influence of this circulation, the resultant convergence zone will trigger some weather activity, albeit limited to some parts only, over the next two days or so. As the emerging weather system is unlikely to repeat track of the previous system, weather conditions are unlikely to worsen over the states of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. Yes, some parts will have heavy rains over the next 24 hours and reduce substantially, thereafter.

The cyclonic circulation of the evolving system over Bay is inducing a confluence zone. North Coastal Andhra Pradesh and a portion of Telangana bordering Odisha, Chhattisgarh and Vidarbha will be at risk of heavy rainfall, today. The locations vulnerable to heavy weather activity will include Adilabad, Mahabubabad, Ramagundam, Mulugu, Bhadradri Kothagudem and Khammam in Telangana. Coastal parts of North Andhra Pradesh will include Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Visakhapatnam, Kakinada, Kalingapatnam,  West &East Godavari, Krishna and Bapatla divisions.  The weather activity will shrink tomorrow and further, the day after, as well.

The upcoming low-pressure area is expected to stay over the sea and organize further, for the subsequent 2-3 days. The monsoon low is likely to shift over the northern parts of the Bay of Bengal, a little away from Coastal Andhra Pradesh. Accordingly, the weather conditions are likely to become better for carrying out relief operations. A major improvement is expected to take place anytime on and after 07th September 2024.
