The month of August as predicted by Skymet Weather kick started with moderate to heavy showers for the state of Punjab. Though, on and off rains have been occurring over the state since July that continued its saga on the first day of August as well.

In the last 24 hours, many parts of Punjab particularly, the northern region of the state recorded moderate to heavy rains. Moreover, Patiala even witnessed a three-digit rainfall to the tune of 125.7 mm.

The other districts of the state that recorded moderate to heavy spells in the span of 24 hours from 08:30 am on Tuesday include Pathankot that recorded 49 mm of rainfall, followed by Ludhiana 44 mm, Bathinda 41.8 mm, Amritsar 19 mm and Chandigarh 8.2 mm.

The reason for these heavy to isolated extremely heavy showers over parts of Punjab as per Skymet Weather can be attributed to the northward shifting of the Axis of the Monsoon trough which is now running from South Punjab to Assam across Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar. Moreover, a fresh Western Disturbance that is seen over North Pakistan and adjoining Jammu and Kashmir also added to these rains.

Furthermore, Skymet Weather reiterates that the Axis of Monsoon Trough is likely to remain around the same area with slight oscillation towards the south. Thus, moderate rains with one or two heavy spells are expected to continue over the northern parts of Punjab for the next 2-3 days.

Thus, districts such as Amritsar, Patiala, Chandigarh, Jalandhar, and Gurdaspur can brace for some moderate to heavy spells. While, the southern region of the state such as Moga, Ferozepore, and Bathinda may witness light spells.
