According to Skymet, heavy rainfall is possible in parts of Odisha, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu over the next 48 hours. A well-marked low-pressure area over the Southwest Bay of Bengal is currently moving north-westwards towards the south Andhra Pradesh and north Tamil Nadu coast.
The associated cyclonic circulation extends up to 5.8 kilometres above mean sea level. After reaching the south Andhra Pradesh coast, this weather system is expected to move along the Andhra Pradesh coast towards south Odisha between December 19 and 20.
Moderate to heavy rainfall is likely to occur over coastal areas of Andhra Pradesh and Odisha. However, light to moderate rain may occur over Rayalaseema, North Tamil Nadu, and South Chhattisgarh. Sea conditions are expected to become rough along the Odisha and Andhra Pradesh coasts during the next two days.
Light rainfall is also possible over South Chhattisgarh, East Telangana, and Gangetic West Bengal. Weather systems, which typically develop in the South Bay of Bengal and the equatorial Indian Ocean during the second half of December, often tend to move towards the Tamil Nadu, Sri Lanka, and Andhra Pradesh coasts. This weather system may be the last strong weather system of 2024 developing in the Bay of Bengal.
